    Meet Total Health Foods

Many of you probably know of Total Health Foods, located on Biddle in Downtown Wyandotte. They are a local grocery and nutritional

health store, specializing in providing organic and natural whole foods, vegan and vegetarian options, vitamins & supplements, organic and all-natural soaps and personal care items, and locally produced organic and natural products. But what many of you may not know is the inspiring story behind their start, which has motivated them to expand their store to great lengths.

Total Health Foods started their business venture with a mission in mind. They felt that a store that promoted natural, nutritional health was missing in our community. Kathleen Gunther, one of the co-owners of Total Health Foods confided that she personally struggled with her own health. Frustrated with the medical fields and their answers, she decided to seek out solutions on her own. Soon she learned a new philosophy on health and nutrition. Her search for knowledge became a passion, which later became her mission: to help others through nutritional based health. With her partners, Annette and Janette Crossman, they opened Total Health Foods in 2008 in Southgate, Michigan. In 2010, they moved to Downtown Wyandotte and have been here ever since.

Over the past few months, Total Health Foods has been working on expanding their ventures to a much larger scale. This November, they have opened their store with the addition of a fresh market, deli counter, organic meats, artisan cheeses, gourmet foods, bulk food items. They even have expanded some of their current specialty lines in their store.

They are now a full service market. One can come to their store to purchase all the necessities, from toothpaste to laundry detergent to gourmet & allergy friendly deli meats to organic produce, Total Health Foods has become a well rounded staple in the Downtown Wyandotte District. They have done extensive interviewing and hiring to triple their knowledgeable, friendly staff so they can better assist their customers’ needs.

For a long time, their industry was known for vitamins, supplements, and essential oils - essential oils is actually still their #1 selling item. However, they have moved toward fresh products. To have a better overall health, it’s important to include fresh foods into our daily diets. Therefore, they have added fresh produce, fresh salads, and fresh meats to their repertoire. When growing season starts in full bloom, they will be incorporating as much locally grown produce as possible. In the future, passerby can appreciate a sidewalk produce sale outside their store in Downtown Wyandotte.

To accommodate for their change in game, Total Health Foods has opened their new location in the former Gail’s Office Supply Complex, located in historic property on Biddle Avenue. Since the building has been vacant for more than a decade, the owners of Total Health Foods made renovations to the building, including new electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling. However, they kept the original walls and tin ceiling. This coincided with their new image for their store. They wanted to feel more rustic and combine local Wyandotte into their store. To do so, they collaborated with Patt Slack of River’s Edge Gallery. Slack handled the interior design of the new Total Health Foods, including commissioning a local artist, Brad Ray. Ray created beautiful signage with salvaged wood from a 100-year old barn owned by the Galeski family, tying the vintage local farmer’s market feel with the new organic, nutritional market philosophy.

Total Health Foods is an active member in their community. They donate to soup kitchens, participate in the Wyandotte Farmers Market, support the local schools and community theater programs. They love to participate in all the local events that they can and being part of the community in which they live and is an active member of the Wyandotte Business Association. Shop local, Eat local: they find it important to support others that support them. They credit the support of the community as to success of their business.

Total Health Foods has been here in Wyandotte for over 5 years. One reason they came to Wyandotte was because it was like coming home to family everyday. “The city itself is supportive and always growing. We love being a part of it”, says Kathleen. They believe that the city was a big part of their success. Total Health Foods moved to 2948 Biddle Avenue, just 2 doors down from their previous address.
