12 Taco Loco Restaurants Downriver

American ‘taco-loco’ quest for authentic street food has brought taquarias and cantinas “across the boarder” so to speak, from Detroit Mexican town to several cities downriver. It’s prevalent that a taco craze has been taking over the community!

Original street tacos consist of meats topped with cilantro, onion and lime placed on a flat tortilla shells. History tells us they were first prepared small enough to wrap and take for lunch, to eat quickly without utensils. Tacos progressed into street food when families prepared them for sale in the city for the working community. Today we find several types available, whether you prefer carna asada meats, seafood or Tex-Mex tacos, there is a location near you! Here are some (but not all) of note worthy tacos.


THE TACO STAND TAQUERIA

This is the place for street tacos that bring big flavor with traditional toppings of cilantro, onion and lime tucked into warm tortillas. With Spanish music in the background, steak, pork, chicken or chorizo tacos are prepared while you wait. The menu is small for fast & fresh service. Aside from tacos the must-try item is their house made carne asada fries- fresh cut fries topped with your choice of meat, cheese, chipotle sour cream, avocado salsa and pico de gallo! Allen Park offers a drive through and both locations have a small area for dining. They suggest calling ahead for carry-out to expedite your order with no wait. Your choice of $1.50 Corn or $1.99 flour tortilla. Try them all on $1 taco Tuesday!

GALINDO’S

It’s worth the dine-in experience here because you’re immediately greeted with complimentary tortilla chips, four house made sauces and a cup or Fiedo noodle soup. Service is quick so you’re not late if you’re on lunch break. Of course they offer traditional street tacos for $1.75 but a few extras on the menu include the Taco de Ciudad, choice of meat and garnished with fresh cut French fries for $2.50. Fish supreme includes Tilapia, lettuce, cheddar, pico de gallo, Baja ranch and sour cream $3.00. There is also a vegetarian option made with sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms and queso fresco for $2.00. These are just a few items on the large menu.

WINE DOTTE BISTRO

This chic and trendy bistro-wine bar presents an eclectic menu with an amazing wine and cocktail list. Jump to the bottom of the menu where you’ll find some exceptional hand crafted tacos bursting with flavor. Choose from tender grilled shrimp, salmon, steak, pork, chicken or vegan asparagus tacos seasoned with a southwestern spice and topped with spicy cabbage, chimichurri and avocado cream sauce. Order comes with two tacos for $10 and includes a side of house made chips and salsa. Order a glass of delicious house made sangria or a specialty cocktail to accompany your meal. Great for lunch or dinner.

ANGELINA’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT

Fresh and authentic food with a family atmosphere is what you’ll find in all three of these locations. Open 7 days, lunch menu offers 2 tacos, (chicken, beef, steak, pork or vegetarian) with lettuce and tomato for $5.49-$6.99. Fiesta taco supreme (chicken, steak or shrimp) with grilled peppers and onions, cheese and sour cream $8.49-$8.99. All tacos include a side of rice and beans. Dinner menu includes three of the above tacos for a slightly higher price. All locations provide a full bar with fantastic margaritas ($3.00 on Tuesdays) house made sangria, cocktails and beer. Taco Tuesday specials are available at the Wyandotte location.

TACO ESPECIAL

Serving downriver since 1979, this large menu has lots to offer. Family packs, mini packs, daily specials and lunch specials are all available. A la carte tacos include ground beef or chicken, deep fried with cheese, lettuce, tomato $1.95. Hard or soft tacos with cheese, lettuce, tomato $1.85, steak $2.40. Something unique and a must try is their ground beef nacho taco topped with melted nacho cheese for $1.95. If you like to spice it up they offer complimentary jalapeños with carry out orders. Hot and yummy, they know what they are doing! Bravo!

CAMINO REAL MEXICAN GRILL

Large seating area with a lot of Mexican flair, this menu brings the feeling and flavors of Mexico to your dining experience. Full bar and service you can enjoy a cold margarita or beer with your meal. Taco fillings include ground or chunky beef, grilled or shredded chicken, marinated or deep fried pork, chorizo (Mexican sausage), steak, shrimp or tilapia, fried pork belly, and on the weekends they offer beef tongue and marinated beef, all topped with choice of traditional cilantro & onion or lettuce & tomato. TIJUANA’S MEXICAN KITCHEN

This restaurant has passed down through several generations keeping the authentic recipes consistent. With three locations (one in Detroit), they expanded to Lincoln Park with a full service restaurant and an express counter service / carry-out location in Southgate. Deep fried tacos are popular here, fried in a flour or corn tortilla with cheese, lettuce and tomato. You can also choose hard, soft or street tacos. Choices include beef, chicken, pork or beans. A couple specialties are Taco Al Pastore - pork in a flour tortilla topped with onion, cilantro and Diablo sauce, and Taco A la Mexicana- fried corn tortilla stuffed with beef, chicken or pork topped with tomatoes. These tacos range $8.75-$9.75 for three, and they offer Taco Tuesdays for the cheapest around at 99¢ Muchas gracias!

GUERO’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT

Newly opened, this remodeled location is charming and tidy. Owned and operated by a couple from SW Detroit, they brought Mexican Town to downriver in pursuit of a dream. Tacos include choice of hard or soft shell, beef, steak, chicken, pork or campechana (steak & chorizo) for $2, shrimp $2.25. The meat is nicely seasoned and well proportioned. They also offered a fried-puffy shell for no extra charge. A big bonus found here is that all the tacos come with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream at no extra charge! The most bang for your buck if that’s what you’re looking for. Guero’s is closed on Sunday but these tacos are a steal on Taco Tuesday for $1.00 each!

BIERKELLER TAVERN & EATERY

What a surprise to find tacos in this tavern! They are not the norm, but created to enhance the Bierkeller menu. Three soft shell tacos for $7.99 are a meal in themselves with choices between the German taco (lean Wigley’s corned beef, red cabbage and bistro sauce) Grilled chicken taco (shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese and lime) Pork taco (fresh cabbage, cilantro picante salsa and lime) or the chicken Caesar taco (romaine, parmesan and Caesar dressing). Each taco brings pleasant savory taste to the palate. Increase the experience with an ice cold craft beer to go with your pick. This tavern is open late with a full service bar, pleasant wait staff with local entertainment on the weekends.

CATRINA’S TAQUERIA

As you walk into the restaurant, you notice plenty of seating in a modern atmosphere. Offering scrumptious traditional street tacos, Catrina’s adds a twist to their menu. First off, if you’re into the low-carb trend, they offer a jicama tortilla which adds a nice crunch to the tacos. A Santa Fe taco filled with fried avocado, cabbage and chipotle cream brought unique flavor and texture combinations to your palate. The Condesa taco is deliciously different made with tomato and pepper infused dried pasta (creating a rice type texture) topped with avocado, crema and queso fresco. They also prepare a steak taco topped with fried chicharron. At $1.99, there is no reason to try one of each.

 TRUAGO

Open 7 days a week this full service restaurant beams with a modern upscale atmosphere. The menu is attractive and the taco selection is impressive. Their four seafood tacos are unparalleled to others. Ahi tuna (avocado, mango salsa and wasabi aioli) in a fried wonton shell gives it a wonderful crunchy texture. Butter grilled lobster also comes in wonton with avocado, mozzarella and lemon aioli. Island shrimp (grilled pineapple, mango salsa, fireball aioli) or Baja perch (avocado, mango salsa) on flour tortillas are both fantastic. For meat seekers there is a pulled pork taco in a crunchy corn shell with cheddar and coleslaw, or a blackened steak with mozzarella, tomato and Sriracha aioli for a little kick. Prices run from $8-$13 for three tacos which are great for an appetizer or entrée.

LOS ARCHOS MARKET

This place is an actual shopping market where you can buy deli meats and groceries, but located in the back they are popping out delicious hot tacos at your request. There is a counter for orders, take-out or eat inside the small seating area. Service is fast and friendly. Daily price is $1.50 and they offer $1 Taco Tuesday and carry-out $20 for $20 tacos on Wednesday! Topped with onion and cilantro, traditional meats are on the menu as well as some ‘out of the norm’ taco fillings like pork rind, ox lip, tongue, tripe and sweetbreads. The weekday lunch special from 11am-1pm (excluding Tuesdays) is three tacos with rice and beans for $5.99. Be sure to use GPS because this hidden gem is off the main road.
