Wyandotte Farmers Market

Wyandotte Farmers Market

Fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, free range organic eggs, delicious treats and wonderful creations. These are just a few of the things that you and your family can find at the Downtown Wyandotte Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market is back for another exciting season of shopping, education and entertainment.

The corner of First Street and Elm Street is transformed into a pop-up farm market every Thursday from 12:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Beginning June 8, farmers, producers, creators and vendors roll into town. The site of the former Wyandotte Theatre, a now vacant and grassy lot transforms into a bustling, active outdoor space where people sit to eat lunch, kids run around on the grass playing, and patrons walk the streets with their bags full of fresh produce and locally created products. There are many opportunities to participate in healthy activities, health and wellness demonstrations and programs.

The City of Wyandotte is fortunate to have a market that is not only supported by shoppers, but also downtown businesses and organizations. Downtown Restaurateurs take the time to purchase farmers market produce and prepare and serve it as a part of their summer menus. "We’re trying to create an arena for discussion and inquiry by showing local restaurateurs exactly what can be purchased through our local vendors, how much and when” Joe Gruber, Director of the Wyandotte Downtown Development Authority stated "If our vendors don’t have exactly what the businesses are looking for at the time, many vendors will try to accommodate and offer to grow it, custom fit to order. We’ve got a great restaurant scene in Downtown Wyandotte, which we’re trying to bolster through this à la carte Farm-to-Table menu program.”

Restaurants are certainly not the only customers benefitting from amazing local produce and healthy foods. The Wyandotte Farmer’s Market is a great resource for families and children. The Market accepts Michigan Bridge (EBT/SNAP) and credit cards which may be processed at the Market Manager tent each week. The Market also participates in the Double-Up Food Bucks Program for those with EBT/SNAP benefits. One of the highlights of the Wyandotte Farmers Market is the Power of Produce Program. Power of Produce (POP) Club is a nationally recognized kids program started at the Oregon City Farmers Market in 2011. Thanks to the support from local community partners, businesses and organizations, the program empowers kids to make healthy food choices, educating them about healthy food choices and about where their food comes from.

POP enrollment is free to all children ages 4 to 12 and enrollment and program dates are limited to the amount of funding received each year. Children who register in the POP Program receive $3 worth of tokens which can only be redeemed by the kids enrolled and only for fresh produce each week. Enrollment for this program will begin on Opening Day, Thursday, June 8th.

The Wyandotte Farmer’s Market has successfully partnered with Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital’s Generation with Promise to bring produce tastings and challenges for kids to the market. Parents often get excited about their kids trying new fruits and vegetables which they may have not otherwise eaten, while learning important lessons around nutrition, diet and health.

Beyond the food, the Wyandotte Farmer’s Market is an amazing place that hosts wonderful events for families and children of all ages throughout the Downriver Region.
