WEYAND’S SEAFOOD: A World of Fish

Weyand Seafoods has been the downriver area's retail seafood source since 1930.

Located at 471 Biddle in the north end of town, Weyand's has been the place to get the best of the local catch from Lake Erie,

including Perch and Walleye. We also have seafood from around the world, sourced from the best vendors in the seafood business.

Being a wholesaler as well as a retailer, we bring in fresh product every day. On the lake fish front, Monday's catch is brought to us on Wednesday, Tuesday's catch on Thursday. Since we sell to restaurants as well as retail, our freshness cannot be matched in the area.

We also bring in product three times weekly, with access to offerings from all over the globe that we can get through our Boston vendors. Regular offerings such as Blue Crab, Cod, Catfish, Salmon, Swordfish, Tilapia, Trout, Tuna, and Whitefish are in our showcase every day. When
available, we will bring in Grouper, Monkfish, Flounder, Mahi, or any variety of fish that is
in season.

With Salmon appearing so prominently on the "Best Foods to Eat" lists that are seen in various publications, we source many types of salmon from all over the world. We have both Wild Caught and Farm Raised Salmon, and are very particular about the vendors that we buy from. In the warm months of the year, fresh Wild Salmon from Alaska is brought in from May to October. In the spring, King Salmon and Sockeye Salmon are most popular, while in the fall the Coho Salmon are strong in September and October. During the other months of the year, we are able to get refreshed Sockeye Salmon from our vendor, who buys fish at the height of the season and freezes it immediately upon catch for the intention of using it in the off season months.

There is much attention paid to Farm Raised Fish these days, and we source the highest end Farmed Salmon from Scotland and Norway. These products are both free from antibiotics and hormones, and exceed the standards for "organic" fish. The feed is controlled, the fish have plenty of water to swim, and are fed by hand, not machines. We sell this product to high-end restaurants as well as our retail customers.

As for Shellfish, for years our showcase has been stocked with Wild Caught Shrimp from South Texas, harvested by American fishermen. We also have the same Shrimp that are peeled and deveined in the "Marisol" brand in our freezer case. This is very popular all year round, but especially at the holidays in December. We also carry Scallops, Clams, Mussels and Oysters from the New England region. Our scallops are "dry packed" to insure the best quality, and sear in the pan when cooked.

Our freezer case is always stocked with both King Crab and Snow Crab, big favorites for special occasions. We also have a half dozen sizes of Coldwater Lobster Tails from Maine from with sizes ranging from 4 -16 ounces.

We are also expanding our prepared offerings as well. For years our customers have enjoyed our homemade Clam Chowder, and we now have Coconut Shrimp, Crab Cakes as well. Plans are for more items such as Stuffed Flounder and other items that we will work with local chefs to prepare great take-home items in addition to our ready to cook products.
